Nicaragua 2009 – Families and the Future, seen
through the eyes of photographer Charlie Thomas.
With over half
of the population under the age of eighteen, Nicaragua is a young
nation. The importance of family is paramount, and in a country
where the vast majority of the people live hand to mouth, there
is a huge sense of national pride. This pride is a self-respect
and dignity deeply rooted in religion, tradition and the family.
Over
the last seven years of her visits, Charlie Thomas has developed
a keen understanding of life on the edge, within this fiercely
independent nation. These photographs, taken during her most
recent visit in 2009, depict the reality of family life within
this ever-increasing and intensely self-dependent people.
